  • citizenship for adopted children living abroad

I am a US citien by birth. I live outside of the US for 17 years. Two and a half years ago my husband and I adopted a child. I want to apply for his citizenship and the local US Embassy tells me that by filling the I-130 Inmigrant visa petition is the ONLY WAY. I do not intend to live in the US so it is odd to apply this way! I know that once my child touch the US soil he will inmediately have the citizenship (by the Child Citizen Act) but as I fill out the form of I-130 there are questions that are not relevant such as: "Address in the United States where your relative intends to live", etc. I do not intend to lie. Is the US embassy "used" to this situation?
    Thank you!

This is a very interesting questions. You wish for child to be a US citizen but have no intention of having the child immigrate. I presume you wish for him to be able to immigrate to the US should he choose to in the future?

The US Embassy has probably seen this situation before from other American expats. Just the irrelevant portions of the I-130 blank and you can explain your intentions at the time of the interview.
