Affiliations Question on Form N400 - Application for Naturalization

Hello all:

I was filling up the Application for Naturalization form N400 and I had the following question about Item 8 - Have you ever been a member of or associated with any organization, association, fund foundation, party, club, society, or similar group in the United States or in any other place?

I understand membership, but I am not sure how you would define association. If you give donation to an organization does it mean you are associated with it. If you attended a party or a meeting organized by an organization would that make an association? Some organization would give you membership if you donate them money without any intention of becoming member and not having any other relationship other than donating some money every year. Would that be an association?

I would appreciate any help.

Is that what you did? How long ago? Have you got your citizenship, or at least went through the interview? Sorry but I just want to make sure that I don't get advice from someone who hasn't gone through what I am going through, or have gone through it long time ago and the things have changed now.
