My grandson became a citizen with his mother in 2013. My son and her separated and she left the state (they did reconcile). They cannot find the documents they need to get their passports - it is asking for their green card number or other documents. My grandson is now 18 and needs to get his passport so how would he get the green card number after 6 years? Would the social security administration have it? We went through an attorney for the entire immigration process but he is no longer in business. Would we be able to get copies through the immigration office locally? Please help. NC will not allow him to get his drivers license without proof of citizenship and the passport is his proof. Thank you so much in advance!!!

This is an old question with no answers... I hope you are still here.
Firstly, if your grandson is now a citizen, then his previous green card is irrelevant.
In fact it should have been destroyed at the Naturalization Ceremony.
His official Certificate of Naturalization is the all-important document now.
You can get replacement copies but it costs $555 to get them.
You mention that he needs his passport to get a driving license... but that cannot be correct.
People who never leave the USA may never even bother to get a passport.
A passport can be helpful... but it is not absolutely necessary.
The important document is his Naturalization Certificate.
It might be possible to get a lower-cost notarized document saying that he is a citizen from USCIS.... but I really don't know about that.
He needs to call the USCIS office that handled his Naturalization and ask them what to do.
I have a suspicion that he may end up needing to pay $555 for the replacement..... but that is only my best-guess.

By the way.. if the attorney is no longer in business... they may be hanging on to their files for (say) 10 years.
Did you actually get in touch with them? It's worth a try.

I just re-read the questions and it sounds like your grandson was only 12 or 13 six years ago.
In that case... the key question is does his parent have their Naturalization certificate?
I got thrown off when you mentioned that he had a previous green card and I missed his age.
