  • Process for a French green card holder to become a dual citizen?

    Hello,

I'm a French citizen and I have an American green card.

I'm about to apply for citizenship in the USA through form N-400 but would like to retain my French citizenship.

What documents must I submit - to the USCIS or the French immigration services - in order to do so?

France allows dual citizenship , so you can just do your US citizenship too.
Anything I post is personal opinion or information from personal experience. This is not legal advice.

Hi -- Thanks for your answer. What I wonder is this -- How will France or the U.S. know that I'm a dual citizen? I read that, for some countries, you're supposed to submit additional paperwork for dual citizenship. Isn't it the case for France?

Coming to this a little late.

More and more countries now recognize Dual Citizenship as Globalization becomes the norm instead of the exception.

I read recently that 9 out of the 10 top "feeder countries" for the US now recognize Dual Citizenship.
"Feeder Countries" are those countries whose citizens apply for Naturalization to the USA
This suggests that a large percentage of new US Citizens will have Dual Citizenship.. perhaps even a large majority.

In some (many?) countries, a person cannot relinquish their citizenship unless they explicitly go to a Consulate/Embassy of their "native" country and freely (without duress or coercion) declare their intention to do so. For these countries, you do not need to do ANYTHING to obtain Dual Citizenship... it is automatic because you did not explicitly go to a Consulate/Embassy of your native country to tell them that you want to end all ties with country.

The rules will vary for each country. To get the definitive answer for France... talk to the French Consulate or Embassy. They probably hear this question on a regular basis and will be happy to help.

Google will find lots more like it.
