  • N-400 document evidences

    Hello,

I am in the process of applying for citizenship and I am a green card holder. I have been on a work assignment in India (last 2 years) by a US corporation and also possess an approved N-470 (Approval to preserve residence) as well.

The N-400 requires IRS certified document evidences (An IRS tax return “transcript” or an IRS-certified tax return listing tax information for the last five years) to be included for people who have travelled for more than a year in the last 5 years after receiving lawful permanent residency.

Does IRS tax return "transcript" correspond to 1040 (first 2 pages) and the state tax return pages?

I want to know if I can attach copies of my 1040 & state tax returns instead of the IRS certified tax return (to be obtained from IRS). Please clarify ASAP since I want to do this as I am currently in US on a visit.

    Regards,
    Murali

    Hi Murali,

First of all, you are right regarding a transcript:

    From USCIS:
If you have taken any trip outside the United States that lasted six months or more since becoming a Permanent Resident, send evidence that you (and your family) continued to live, work and/or keep ties to the United States, such as:
    - An IRS tax return “transcript” or an IRS-certified tax return listing tax information for the last five years (or for the last three years
if you are applying on the basis of marriage to a U.S. citizen).
    - Rent or mortgage payments and pay stubs.

YOU SHOULD GET TAX RETURN "TRANSCRIPT" FROM IRS NOT FROM COPIES OF YOU.

You can get them free of charge throught phone call (only past 3 years). It is better that mail the form in order to get the 5 years before.

By the way, you should read the M-476 guide. It is really important because
you have to reside in the district or state in which you are applying for citizenship for the last three months before applying and you only are in US on a visit. be aware of that.

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck
