  • Medical Insurance a mandatory requirement for a citizenship applicant from Nov/3rd.

I just got a call from friend mentioning someone in office told about news that starting from Nov/3rd, DHS will reject cases where applicant doesn't have verifiable medical insurance. Does anyone know what would happen to those in process lose there jobs/cobra etc?

Please share if anyone has any information...

In general (as you probably know) if you have employer-based insurance and then get laid off you are eligible for Cobra continuation of coverage for a specific time period but you are not required to use the Cobra mechanism if you can find better prices elsewhere.

If you choose Cobra and that time period expires, you would be able to apply for coverage under the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare).

Depending on your income at the time of applying for insurance under the ACA you may be forced to accept Medicaid (if your income is below a certain threshold) or you might obtain reduced-price medical insurance on a sliding scale as your income gets lower or higher. The less you earn, the better the discounts and tax breaks.

Everything I just said applies for all legal permanent residents whether applying for citizenship or not (ie it includes green card holders).

So, in a nutshell..... if you don't have insurance through an employer or through Cobra then go to the ACA Obamacare website for your State and get it from there.

They are probably referring to the proclamation that people entering on immigrant visas after November 3rd will need to show they will get insurance within 30 days (see also this State Department page). It does not affect green card holders and does not affect naturalization.
