  • name change issue

I finished my oath last month and during that process the officer asked if I want to change my name and I said yes. I filled out the name change form - but didnt get a copy back (i realize i should have insisted on it)

Now I applied for PIO and they need this form. There is actually no real change in name but the usual desi issue involving too many names.

Now anybody know whom I can talk/call ? I Tried the dozen numbers I got online but keep getting some deadend eiths a call center only or not the dept you are looking. This is for Newark, NJ office at 970 broad st.

Any help will be appreciated. Also should I ask for immigration court or CIS or clerk office or what - cant understand so many departments .....

Try visiting the same local office to see if they can provide you the copy of that form.

However, is filling that form the only thing you did regarding the name change? If so, what was that form? Any form number?

Did you not have to go through court or anything like that? I believe that they would have given you the court order granting the name change.

Please provide me more details so that we can understand it better to see if we can help you.

Thanks. I am planning to go next week in person. But I know they have said on their website that there is no walk-in.

The officer asked if I want a name change as there is additional process to go through - I initially said no but then said yes as she said there is a difference in the name. She asked me to sign a document - didnt see a form# but it said something like my former name is 'A B C D' and the new name is 'A B C' and some additional place for signature that she signed.

I believe they are linked to the court.

I have to decide in the next two weeks if I can get it from these guys. I dont have time for the formal process that takes 6-8 weeks and $500. I need to travel home in next 3 weeks and need to resolve this asap. Maybe I have to go for a visa.

        1.
That is very unusual. Even if in such cases, they ask to go through the lengthy procedure.

I am not sure what kind of form that is.

If you just can't walk-in, you can take InfoPass appointment and go.

        2.
If you need to travel in next 3 weeks, there is no way you are going to get PIO card in time. You will have to go for India visa.

You mean there is no way to avoid a full court ? How could they give my passport without this process then ? Unless we say they are more lenient than the indian counterparts.

          2) why ? My wife already got it - it takes 4 days to get PIO in NY. I just need this document.

            1. That is how you I understand. Even if you want to change the name at the time of naturalization, you have to appear in court and all that. If they didn't ask you to do that, it is good for you. However, how are you going to get the proof of name change now?

            2. If they give you PIO in 4 days, that is good for you.
