Biometrics on Aug 7, 2019
Online Wait timeline provided 15 months. Oct 2020 (was consistent from Sept 2019 onwards.
Briefly during covid peak, Mar-June 2020, it was stated as unknown
Interview schedule intimation Oct 29, 2020 (electronic followed by actual letter a week later)
Interview date: Dec 1, 2020
Interview and oath: Dec 1, 2020
Interview was first thing in the morning.
Around 12-15 waiting in the lobby. Immigration officer called me within 15 min of scheduled time. He was very friendly. So were others who I saw briefly at the lobby.
In his office:
1. Asked civics questions. Got the first 6 right, so he stopped.
2. Then reading/writing - one sentence each using the tablet.
3. Confirmed questions on application - e.g. last international travel, current employer. Said that I was between jobs, asked last date of employment and updated N400, had me sign at end.
4. Long list of unlawful activities. Answers to most are No, except did you pay taxes. Citations: I said yes, traffic ticket, asked what happened, said 10-15 years back don't remember .. he moved on.
5. Took oath right there.
There was a network problem. He tried 10 min to fix and then escorted me to the lobby while he could get IT guy to fix.
Came back in 10 min and gave a printout with checklist that I finished the tests successfully.
Certificate to be sent in the mail. Fingerprint upload and review impacted due to IT issue.
Should get it within a week.
My wife who had the same appt got her certificate after the 10 min wait.
For others it was a mix between the two. The IT issue was the reason.
Total time: 30 min with the officer and 15 min wait before and 10 min after. But for IT issue, both of us would have been out in an hour'ish with interview, oath and citizen certificate all done.
Officers are very professional, polite and friendly. Security is simple and effective - also fast.
The process is so smooth that I didn't realize that I had been through the oath. When I was handed the checklist, I asked the officer, the timeline for certificate and ceremony. On the latter, he gave me a puzzled look evident despite the mask.
