  • Question on N-400 foreign passports

I will be submitting my N400 with dual citizenship. For my green card I applied as a foreign national of country B (my most recent residence prior to application for the green card) and have hired immigration attorneys for the process. For the N400 I will not be hiring an attorney to complete the application on my behalf, and I am confused about the following:

What is your country of citizenship or nationality?

Provide the name of the country as it currently exists, where you are currently a citizen or national. If the country no longer exists, use the current name of the country.

If you are a citizen or national of more than one country, provide the name of the foreign country that issued your last passport.

I have had country A passport since birth and country B passport since my naturalization in 2014, but I renewed country A passport recently and thus, the issue date on country A passport is more recent. What do they mean by last passport "issued"? Would I write down the name of country A or country B?

The Country that issues the Latest Passport is what you put here.

So I am still not clear, when they refer to "issued" do they mean issued as in "status of citizenship issued", or renewal of passport?

The issue date listed on your latest PP.

IMO, by "the name of the foreign country that issued your last passport" they mean which is your most recent citizenship (not renewal of passport). So you are A by birth, but B is the most recent passport issued to you. So, Country B for you.

Also, I am not 100% sure, but I think whichever country's passport you used when you applied for your Green card, that is the Country you should put on your N-400 application. Your A-number is linked to that country. So, again, Country B for you.

Lastly, if you are hiring an attorney for filing the N-400 on your behalf, why are you worrying about this? They will fill it for you - let the attorney earn their pay.
