I will be filing N 400 in September. My son who is a permanent resident will turn 18 in October. Is it a must for me to file N 600 for my son, or can I just wait for him to turn 18 and then file N 400 for him

If you do not take the oath before your son turns 18, he will not automatically become a citizen. He would have to apply for naturalization for himself as an adult (if he chooses to, of course) with N-400. The earliest he can file N-400 is on his 18th birthday (if he has already been a permanent resident for 5 years at that point).
This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
