  • Can I request USCIS to move my oath ceremony to a later date?

    Hi,

I am in the process of getting US citizenship. My citizenship interview is scheduled for 9/15/21 post which the oath ceremony would be within 30 days of the interview ~10/15/21. I am planning to travel to India on my Indian passport and green card in December. Can I request USCIS to move my oath ceremony to January 2022? Is it possible? What's the process?

    Thanks!

    Hi,
Of course Yes. You will surely have option to reschedule Oath Ceremony later time through written request. If you have reasonable reason, USCIS will give you option to request for postponing date.
    All the best.
    Thanks

Question: what prevents you from attending oath ceremony, applying for passport next day, and then hopefully getting US passport in time for your December trip? Should be enough time (8 weeks)

Thanks for asking. I think the US passport processing time is higher these days more like 12 weeks. After the passport, there would be 2 more steps. Surrender Indian passport to apply for Renunciation Certificate and then apply for OCI/ Emergency Visa. None of these can be completed in parallel. What’s your advice?
