  • US Passport for children of naturalized parents

    Hi,

My wife and me got recently naturalized.

We have 2 children - 17 and 14 and both have Green Cards. We are NOT considering getting a Certificate of Citizenship for the children and planning to apply for their passports directly.

Can we apply for US Passport for both children along with my wife's and my passport application? or do we have to wait for my wife's and my passport and then apply for the children's?
    Please guide.

    Appreciate your help and guidance.

    Thanks
    - M

You have to be US Citizens to get a passport (US birth certificate or Certificate of Naturalization/Citizenship). And that makes sense. Why issue a passport to a non-US Citizen? I am not aware of any exceptions to that (that does not mean it does not exist).

The children are already US citizens according to US law. The question is whether their passports can be applied together with the parent's.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

I think all can apply for passports at the same time. You should prove derivative citizenship by showing original and copies of:
        - their green cards
        - your naturalization certificate
        - your marriage document
        - birthday document
I read that both parents should be present.
Nov 2018 - Package sent - EB - Texas Service Center
Day 1 - Package received at the lockbox
Day 999 - Card delivered to me - Aug 2021

I had a friend who was able to apply all at once so it is possible.
in my case, the post office accepting the application refused to accept them all together. I got mine first, then one child followed by the other. It took a few months but wasn’t bad. I received each passport in only a little over a month.
