  • A decision cannot be made

So my wife had her interview today at Chicago location. She has passed all the tests but she struggled to explain the tax of 2020. The officer could not find that we have paid the 2020 tax from the printed turbotax thick 2020 tax document. She went back to check on our joint checking account to see if we paid it or not. Of course she did not find that because I have paid it from my business checking account and I have not print any statement from that account because I thought it's not Relevant here since we don't share it as a joint account. Also my wife was nervous at that moment and she forgot to tell her that i have another business account that I used to pay the tax from.

So she marked the following :

1- You passed The English test and the U.S. History and government test.

2- Follow the instructions on Form N-14,Request for Additional Information, Documents, or Forms.

3- A decision cannot be made yet about your application.

The officer told my wife that she should expect a letter coming in the mail with some instructions on providing evidence of paying the tax abd how to follow up.

Could someone explain what I need to prepare? I don't have anything to hide and I could print a bank statement from my business account showing that we have paid 2020 tax long time ago. Is there another official way to do it to make thing more smooth any easy?

Maybe they will ask for an IRS tax transcript, but I'm not sure.

You need to login to IRS website and login to your account (create an account if you do not have IRS username):

      https://sa.www4.irs.gov/secureaccess...2egov%2fola%2f

Once you download your tax transcript for 2020, it should show balance of zero. That is the proof that you will need to mail them when/if you get an RFE. Turbotax tax returns shows what you filed....official IRS tax transcripts shows what IRS processed.

The tax mix-up can definitely be clarified. Since you paid the 2020 tax from your business account, printing out a bank statement to show the payment is a great idea. It's always good to have a paper trail. When you receive the letter in the mail, just follow the instructions carefully. They might ask for specific documents or forms, so make sure you provide all the evidence they need. If you really can't make the decision - simply flip coin. That must help!
