  • N400 gaps in employment and address

Hi friends, I am stuck at a couple of questions in the N400 online application form.
    1. I moved from one state to another state (domestic travel) and lived in a hotel for 5 days looking for an apartment in the new state. Should I list the hotel name for those 5 days as my "physical address"?
    2. One of my jobs ended on Friday and new one started on Monday. Before Friday, I already had the new job offer letter and they dont work on weekends (corporate job). Should I select "unemployed" to fill in the 2 days in between?
    Thank you!

I'll start of by saying I would say do whatever you feel most confident/comfortable with but I think you are over thinking it with these questions. These are more just broad general questions that help when doing background checks and working out what cities, counties or states to search for when looking for arrests etc.

Here is how I would answer these questions:

    1. I would use the old address for those last 5 days. That hotel was a short temporary address. If you ended up staying there for weeks or months then absolutely I would use it but in this case I wouldn't. For example you could have already found the apartment and decided to go on holiday for that week before starting the new job and ending the old job. You wouldn't write the hotel address down in that case.

    2. Same with the job. I would state that I worked with the old company up to the Sunday before the new job started. You were never unemployed. If there were weeks or months gaps where you were not being paid then you were unemployed but in this case there is no gap in pay checks or work. If someone asked you what you did for work during the weekend you wouldn't say I'm currently unemployed until Monday where I go back to work at this place.

This is how I would answer these questions and actually how I did for the work questions. I hope this helps!

But like I said do what you feel more comfortable with. If you want to do the minute detail then go ahead but I personally don't think it necessary and I wouldn't do it that way.
