  • Lost my green card, can I apply for N400 WITHOUT replacing it?

    Hello everyone!

So I'm finally at the 5 year mark where I can apply for citizenship and now that life is getting somewhat more normal, I started to put my paperwork together and realised I can't find my green card.
I've hardly left the house in 2 years, at this point I'm guessing either the cat or the dog ate the thing because I can't see any other explanation!
Anyways, can I proceed with a N400 application or do I have to replace the green card first?
I've researched but the information is conflicting, really need some clarification.

    Thank you in advance!

If you are a lawful permanent resident, you must submit photocopies (front and back) of your Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card with your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.

You will also need to bring your
Permanent Resident Card and a state-issued identification such as a driver’s license to your interview with USCIS. If you have lost your Permanent Resident Card, attach a copy of any other entry document or a photocopy of a receipt showing that you have filed the Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. The above is the official stand USCIS recommends.

It is prudent to maintain a valid Green card document for travel purposes, employment verification, getting driver's license renewed etc. Until you get a favorable reply to your N400 application your Green card validity is crucial to not incur hardships.
