Hello,
My wife submitted her N-400 and is about to attend her interview this week. As we were preparing we wanted to double check something we had done on her application.
Some background: when we got married, prior to applying for her green card, (using made up names for example purposes) she changed her name from her maiden name Mary Kate Smith to --> Mary Smith Johnson. Johnson being my last name, and moving her maiden last name to her middle name. She successfully registered that name with Social Security and got a drivers license with that name. That is her legal name on EVERY form of documentation except her green card and foreign passport.
When we went to our green card interview, the officer informed us that she could not change her middle name -- "Kate" -- and for the purposes of immigration and her green card, they must make her name "Mary Kate Johnson."
When we filled out the N-400, Part 2 - #1 asks for your "current legal name." We put the name on her SSN card and DL -- Mary Smith Johnson, as she would consider that her legal name.
#2 asks for "your name as appears exactly on your permanent resident card," which we put Mart Kate Johnson -- the name given to her by USCIS during the green card interview. We also put her full maiden name that appears on her passport for other names in #3.
#4 asks if you want "to legally change your name." We specified "No" as we want her name to be the "legal name" listed above in #1 upon naturalization.
Did we do this correctly? Is there anything specific to know, say, or specify during the interview itself?
Many thanks!
