  • Question Regarding Selective Service Registration

    Hi Everyone,

While I was going through the Selective Service Registration thread, I got really confused, I was under the impression that anyone who is 26 and over at the time of GC approval date, they don't need to sign up for selective services.
Here is my case, when I entered the USA, I was 30 years, 9 months, and 9 days old. But at the time of my Green card approval, I was 34 years 10 months, and 13 days old.
According to what I read in the different forums, I was already above 31 years old while receiving a Green card and should not impact my N-400 application and interview which is in the next month.
Can you please make me clear on this part, whether I should provide any confirmation regarding the Selective Service registration? I just wanted to make sure, I am on the right track and will not ruin my interview just because of this matter.

I will appreciate the input and feedback.

    Thanks

I arrived at the age of 26 on an F1 visa then did OPT, H1B and received my Green Card via marriage age 31/32. I never signed up (Didn't have to) and was never asked about it at my interview. (US Citizen since 2/14/2022). I believe you are only required to sign up if you are on a Green Card between the ages of 18-25. As you were clearly over the age by the time you received your green card this should not even be an issue so don't worry about it! Hopefully this helps!

As always i'm no expert and my advise could be wrong but i think you are fine and got nothing to stress about!

      Immigrants & Dual Nationals

      Immigrants
U.S. immigrants are required by law to register with the Selective Service System 30 days after their 18th birthday or 30 days after entry into the United States if they are between the ages of 18 and 25. This includes U.S. born and naturalized citizens, parolees, undocumented immigrants, legal permanent residents, asylum seekers, refugees, and all males with visas of any kind which expired more than 30 days ago.

The few individuals who are exempt from this requirement are those on current non-immigrant visas, as long as they remain on a valid visa up until they turn 26. If you have received a letter from us requesting that you register, please send us copies of supporting documentation to show you are exempt.

      Dual Nationals
U.S. dual nationals are required by law to register with the Selective Service System within 30 days of their 18th birthday, regardless of whether they live inside or outside of the U.S. Dual nationals residing outside of the U.S. can register using a foreign address here.

No worries!! I had the same panic attack when initially submitting my N400 but when I looked more into it, its basically only applicable to people who were on a green card aged 18-25 or i guess asylum or refugees.
