  • Filling N400

    Hello

I'm planning to apply for naturalization. My understanding needs to fill form N-400, which i can do it online.
The question, do i need to fill separately for myself and my wife ( 2 N-400 form), or there is a way to fill it jointly?
How about kids? do i need to apply for them as well. I have 2 kids, one born overseas and currently holding green card like me and second sone born in US (has US passport)

    Thank you

Your wife and you each have to file your own N-400.

The child born in the USA is a U.S. citizen and you should get that one a U.S. passport card. That child is not eligible to file N-400 and I am perplexed by the question.

The child with a gc will become a U.S. citizen when your wife or you become a U.S. citizen, provided that happens before the child reaches age 18.

Kid with green card does not need to file N400 until they're 18. If you become a citizen before they're 18, they automatically become a citizen.
Also, no joint application. One each for you and your wife.

Thank you. How about N-600, what is it?

pretty sure that is the application to replace your original cert (if lost or destroyed) or apply for one for your children if they became citizens through you becoming a citizen. They won't automatically be issued one, when you get yours at the oath ceremony. I don't have kids but from reading from other people responses if you get your kid a US passport when you apply the passport can be used pretty much in the same places as a certificate for them to prove citizenship. So if you want to save money or apply at a later date for your Childs certificate then going the passport route should probably work

So really don't need that N-600, and it is more expensive than N-400

                Thank you for answer

looks like i gave some semi bad advise there. n-600 is just applying for a certificate for minors and not replacing a lost certificate. but, uscis website does say this about it. (https://www.uscis.gov/forms/all-form...sked-questions)
I already have a U.S. passport issued by the Department of State. Am I required to file a Form N-600 for a Certificate of Citizenship?

No. You are not required to file a Form N-600 for a Certificate of Citizenship. The Certificate of Citizenship is an optional form. A validly issued U.S. passport generally serves as evidence of your U.S. citizenship during its period of validity unless that passport has been revoked by the Department of State. However, you may be required to submit your Certificate of Citizenship when attempting to apply for certain other benefits, including, but not limited to:
                    • Social Security benefits
                    • State issued ID including a Driver’s License or Learning Permit
                    • Financial Aid
                    • Employment
                    • Passport Renewal

So im confused, so to get passport for my kid who has a gc right now, dont need to apply N-600, am i correct. Once me and my wife get naturalization, children will get automatically passport, right?

Sorry for confusing the matter. When you become a citizen and if your child with a GC is under the age of 18 when you become a citizen. The child will automatically become a US citizen. You can then apply for a passport for your child with the GC using your naturalization certificate to prove they are now also a US citizen along with any other evidence they require. The Passport as long as its valid can be used to prove your Childs citizenship from that point onwards and would be a cheeper way to show citizenship.

The N-600 can be completed at any time during your child's life if they want to obtain a certificate for citizenship. From other peoples experiences it seems that passport will pretty much cover them in most places to prove their citizenship but there might be exceptions where a certificate is required but I don't know what these situations are!
