  • Dual Citizenship after getting US Citizenship?

Just wondering, did any of you apply for dual citizenship after acquiring your US citizenship? If so, when did you apply to get your previous citizenship back in order to be a dual citizen? Did you wait for months, years, etc? When is it ideal to apply for dual citizenship? Or is it something you do/did not consider at all?

Just wanted to know your thoughts. Thank you.

You don't "apply for dual citizenship". Each country's nationality law is independent, and you are a dual citizen if multiple countries' laws each say you are their citizen. If the law of the country of your existing citizenship does not say that you lose that citizenship upon acquiring US citizenship, then you will be a dual citizen after acquiring US citizenship. It's that simple. There is nothing to "apply" for to either the US or that country.

In some rare cases (namely, the Philippines), acquiring US automatically causes loss of that citizenship, but you have the option to apply to restore that citizenship without needing to give up US citizenship. In that case, you can apply to restore it if you wish.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

If you don't mind me asking what nationality are you? Ive only seen Indian and now Philippines that requires you to give up your citizenship in order to become American. I think with the Indian if you wanted to have Indian nationality again you would have to give up US Citizenship. I am British and basically the British government doesn't recognize me 'giving up my citizenship' when taking the US Citizenship Oath where I renounce my previous allegiance. If i wanted to relinquish my British citizenship then its only accepted if I go to a British embassy and formally renounce it in front of a British officer. Its a strange loop hole where US makes you declare giving up previous allegiance but the home country doesn't recognize the oath. I believe this is the case for many countries where they don't recognize you giving up your citizenship by taking the oath for American Citizenship.

Its a weird strange loop hole that we now use in the modern world and this is often what people mean when they say they become duel citizens or applied for duel citizenship. ie they just gained a new citizenship and the old one refuses to recognize you having given up your previous one.

However there are a few countries that officially recognize the US Citizenship Oath as you renouncing your old one but I am not 100% sure which ones they are but a quick google by you should easily find the answer!

Exactly, it depends on your " original " citizenship. For example I am german: when I apply for us citizenship ( in May) / become us citizen- i automatically loose the german citizenship- unless i apply in Germany to keep it BEFORE applying for us citizenship. But, you need to meet certain requirements in order to be able to keep the german citizenship - they changed that years ago. Doesn't really matter to me , cause I don't want Dual citizenship.

wow didn't realize you would have to give up German nationality. I wrongly assumed you guys would be the same as the UK! I'll add that to my list of countries now!

Yeah, they even got so nuts that you can apply for " voluntarily giving up your german citizenship " - really?? Why the heck would someone apply to voluntarily giving it up, if you loose it automatically?? Just a last attempt to get money out of you for that application if you're stupid enough to do sofirst I thought, I didn't read right or misunderstood- but it really is a thing!
