  • Planning to get married while application is pending

I was wondering if anyone have any opinion or have been in the same situation ... I filed my N-400 a about month ago and I did my biometrics already and hoping that I am only waiting for my interview schedule.

Me & my boyfriend have been together for long time now and been planning to get married. He's of legal status and a Legal Permanent Resident. My question is, while waiting for my application/schedule interview, it is advisable for me to get married while my application is still in process?

Any advise is highly appreciated. Thanks!

The only things to consider are. Will your name change by marriage? Will you want your certificate and later, your passport in the married or maiden name? A M/C can cerve as a legal name change document.

If you do marry, regardless of how you choose to handle your name, you would need to supply the M/C at interview so that the certificate can be issued with correct information as to marital status.

They might need to re-run the name check on the new name. It should not be a big delay unless your new name becomes a very common name or becomes the same as some other "person of interst", such as with a record of some sort. Either of those could be true of your current name as well.

Thank you again for the advice. My only concern was if ever I do get married before my interview schedule with an Immigration Officer, would it delay my application? Since you've explained it very well, I have now a clearer understanding now and I just have to decide wisely : )

Thank you again and God speed ...
