I am not or never have been a Indian Citizen but I know that you guys have to give up citizenship after you become a US Citizen. As you don't become a US citizen until you take the Oath at the Oath Ceremony I don't think it it would affect you traveling to India after applying but before becoming a US citizen. But, just wanted to say i'm not an expert on this!
But I can give you information in travelling abroad generally during the process.
You can definitely go abroad after filing the N400 but I would make sure you keep an eye on your USCIS online account as they will upload all letters sent to you on that. Therefore you would be able to see the interview letter/schedule on that as soon as it was created!
For length of time as long as it does not effect your continuous and physical requirement to become a US citizen you will be fine. So short stays would absolutely be fine. I would be careful with long trips or lots of short trips! I would personally keep way under the 6 months outside in a year period but that is just me!! But definitely don't go over 6 months total!
As soon as you take the Oath Ceremony you will become a US citizen and therefore will be unable to travel abroad until you get a US passport.
I am not expert and this is just my understanding but hope it helps!
