  • Should I or should I not file for naturalization?

    Hello,

I got a GC based on an employer sponsorship, but didn't work for that sponsoring employer after I received my GC. I received my GC in February 2007, so technically, I can file for naturalization early next year, 2012.

I'm a bit uncomfortable about the employment history in the past 5 years for the reason I stated above. Do you think I should postpone my application for citizenship instead? Should I wait for 2 more years? Or when would it be prudent to start thinking about naturalization in this circumstance?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Even though you are within your rights to file, I would wait the extra time. Especially since the GC application was based on employment. The officer may have complaints.

I was also an employment based GC (L1A) and was employed with the same employer for 5 years after I received the GC. I am now in the process of applying for citizenship.

    Good luck!

You might be ok if you switched to a job (or job title) that is more or less similar to the job category for which your GC was sponsored. Also some issues (like potential layoffs) at your sponsoring company might be satisfactory reason to explain USCIS why you had to change your job immediately after you got your GC.
