Naturalization after breakign contineous Residency

Dear Friends,
If someone is a US green card for the last many years (say 5+), but he looses the contineous residency (for whatever reason) and enter US back after 2 years (on reentry permit).

How long he has to wait before he can file for the citizneship?
He has to wait 3 years or 5 years?

If he stays 3 contineous years in US (and accumulate 30 months), can he apply for naturalization?
