  • Child born to US Citizens in India

My wife and I are recently naturalized US Citizens. My wife is currently 4 months pregnant and we just found out that my inlaws won't be able to visit us here during the delivery (,which means we will be on our own during/after the delivery:-)). We are seriously thinking of going down to India and having the baby there, just to take advantage of the support system we have down there.

I believe a child born overseas to US Citizens will automatically become a US Citizen. Is this correct? Are there any complications in getting a US passport from India? Also would the child need an Indian VISA (after he/she gets his/her US passport, obviously) to fly out of India?

    Please respond.

You will have to report the birth at the U.S. consulate. That is not a problem.

No, the child would not need Indian visa to fly out of India for the first time as he/she would already have the birth certificate.

Of course, for any subsequent visits, he/she would need visa or OCI or PIO.
