  • Naturalized Parent

Hello everyone. My father moved us to the US from Canada in 1979 when I was 4 y/o. I was born in Canada. My father was naturalized in 1986. I always thought that his naturalization applied to me as well, but now I'm not certain. I've lived in the US for more that 30 years, have served in the military, and have a valid SSN. I began doubting my status when I started looking into getting a passport so I could vacation overseas; I found that I couldn't provide the documents/proof required. Am I a citizen?? Please help!

I think you should consult an attorney experienced in immigration matters.
I would think the above applies if the parent is a US citizen at the time of your birth abroad, you would be US citizen by default. But if your father acquired the citizenship after you were born, you may only be a citizen of whatever citizenship your father held at that time.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.

kabkaba is right in saying that you were not born to a US Citizen but I assume you came to the US as a permanent resident with your father and then he became naturalized.

I think you need to apply to USCIS for a Certificate of US Citizenship (Form N600). I would suggest to look at the below links and then definitely consult with an immigration lawyer.
