  • Citizenship and compulsary Medicare

    Hi,
I am a green card holder and will become eligible for citizenship next year.
I understand that Medicarepremium payments is compulsory once you are a citizen. It works to about USD 1100 per month for both me and my wife. I dont have any income in US. I have some fixed deposits in India out of which I get Interest income of 10000 USD per year.

I also understand that is I cannot afford to pay the premium and if any amount I have in Bank is less than USD 3000.00 govt would pay the premium for medicare. Is this information correct? Will the amout I have in India would be considered in assessing this USD 3000.00 deposit in Bank?

I plan to be in India after getting citizenship for more than 8 months in a year. Does it make any sense to have medicare for me? Can I avoid that?

You are not required to enroll (that is purchase, if you have not worked in the U.S.) in Medicare if you become U.S. citizenship. There is no such rule.

By the way, answer to your other question is: Your worldwide assets are considered in determing any eligibility for Medicaid (not Medicare).
