  • Need and importance of citizenship

My husband had his Greencard before marriage, so i got my GC based on his naturalization and now he and my kids are US citizens. I got my GC in 2010 but did not maintain it as we relocated to India soon after that. However i have reentry permit thats valid till March 2012.So everyone in my family hold citizenship ( my husband and my kids).I want to know if its better that i too get my citizenship(for which i need to maintain my GC for 3 yrs ) and if yes, i want to know the benefits/advantage in view of my kids future as we are planning to relocate back to US before my reentry permit expires, but we are in a dilemma on how important is it to get my citizenship also without loosing my GC and the last chance that i have. Any reasons for the need of not loosing my GC and wait for my citizenship is appreciated.

Since you are eventually planning to relocate to the US and most likely your kids will live and work in the US as well, citizenship is really beneficial for you. You will not have to be afraid of losing your GC status if you leave the country for an extended time since you will be travelling with a US passport and you will also benefit from certain rights that are only for US citizens. If I were you, I would certainly get naturalized.

Thanks for the reply. My husband was always under the thoughts that there's really no need for my citizenship, as anyway he ( one of the parents is a citizen )and that i can go or stay in US as his dependant, but i dont think thats possible as i still need to either maintain my GC or become citizen to live or visit US.So i guess its better for both parents to get their citizenship when theres a chance in view of accompanying the kids when they want to go and study in the US at later time.

Just repeating my personal opinion, but if I were you, I would definitely get naturalized.
