  • Should i file zero income tax return before Application?

I've had a green card for 20 years. I'm looking to file my N400 application and was wondering how to answer or prepare for certain questions. I haven't filed a tax return for the last 5 years as I've been under the amount needed to file. In fact my income was zero as while my girlfriend works (we live together) I stay home and look after the 2 kids. A bit of a role reversal....but it works!!

How do you answer the employment history question, and should I file 5 years of zero income tax returns as this is possible to do? (in order to have the tax return copies ready for the interview)

Employment is not a prerequisite, so you can leave that blank. You can be a stay-at-home dad, no problem with that. Regarding zero income, I guess that should not be a problem as well. I would call the IRS and ask if there is some documentation they could provide you that you did not have to file since you had no income.
