  • oath ceremony postponement

    hello

i have my interview and test on 22-Nov-11. How long does it usually take to get the Oath notification letter? Should the Green Card be surrendered at the time of interview/ testing or during oath ceremony time?

Is it possible to postpone Oath Ceremony by a few weeks?
I understand that postponing oath ceremony is not a good thing to do, but I my marriage date is fixed for end of january and I am trying to understand if I can be in India by that time or not

    Please advise

    Thanks
    KV

The oath notification and date really depends on the local USCIS office. Some offices do same day oaths (i.e., the oath is right after the interview on the same day), some give the oath letter after the interview and schedule it within a week or two, and some say to wait for it in the mail. The green card is surrendered at the oath ceremony, which means that prior to the oath you are a green card holder and not a US citizen, yet (even if you were approved during the interview).

You can postpone the oath but you have no control over how long it is postponed. It might happen that your oath is postponed by months. If I were you I would try to complete the naturalization process before you leave for India. Given your timeline you might actually make it in time and travel as a US citizen.

In case you are not able to complete the naturalization process and leave for India, then after you return and go to your oath ceremony, you need to update your information with USCIS that you have traveled and also married after your interview. This is done on the back of form N-445. Since you will have married, you will need to provide documented proof of marriage and if need be, an English translation.

You will need to provide that information at the back of your oath notice (Form N-445) which you are going to take with you to the oath ceremony. The officers will ask for this notice at the oath ceremony and you will show both the notice and your green card. The first two questions at the back of the oath notice are:

        After your naturalization interview

        1. Have you married, or been widowed, separated or divorced? (If "Yes," please
bring documented proof of marriage, death, separation or divorce.) Yes/No

        2. Have you traveled outside the United States? Yes/No
