  • Travel outside US immediately after interview for naturalization

I may need to leave the US for no more than a week few days after the naturalization interview but before having an american passport in hand. I plan to travel with my green card and of italian passport and of course I need to be able to reenter the US.
    So Questions:
-Is my green card taken away at the naturalization interview if I pass?
-Is my green card taken away at the naturalization interview if I fail? (something I do not anticipate)
-In either cases above is my Italian passport taken away?
-When do you exactly become a citizen, is it at interview if passed or at oath?
-When is actually your green card taken away if at all?
-How long between the oath ceremony and passport in hand?

    thank you

-Is my green card taken away at the naturalization interview if I pass?
    NO

-Is my green card taken away at the naturalization interview if I fail? (something I do not anticipate)
    NO

    NO

-When do you exactly become a citizen, is it at interview if passed or at oath?
    AT THE OATH

-When is actually your green card taken away if at all?
THEY COLLECT IT AT THE OATH CEREMONY

-How long between the oath ceremony and passport in hand?
DEPENDS: ROUTINE = 4-6 WEEKS; EXPEDITED = 2-3 WEEKS; SAME-DAY PASSPORT POSSIBLE AT PASSPORT PROCESSING AGENCY IF YOU PROVE THAT YOU HAVE UPCOMING TRAVEL WITHIN TWO WEEKS

You can travel between the interview and oath with your greencard. When coming back from your trip, you need to enter the new travel on the back at your oath notice; i.e., USCIS allows you to travel but they want the dates you traveled between your interview and oath.

      Thank you for your reply.

      One more question.

-Is it true that in some places the interview and oath are in the same day. Mine is in Baltimore.
-If needed is it possible to reschedule the oath ceremony? meaning, skip the one I get scheduled for and go to a following one ?

      thank you

        - Yes, some offices offer same-day oaths, but I do not know about Baltimore.

        - Yes, it is possible to reschedule the oath ceremony, but it is generally advised not to do it since you may be rescheduled for an oath months out; i.e., skipping one oath does not mean you get to attend the next one. They put your file into a queue with all other oaths to be re-scheduled and it may take a while until your turn comes. So reschedule only if it is absolutely necessary.

If you cannot go to the oath ceremony, you have to return the “Notice of Naturalization Oath
Ceremony” (Form N-445) that you received to the local USCIS office. Attach a letter saying why you cannot attend the ceremony. Make a copy of the notice and your letter before you send them. Your local USCIS office will reschedule you and send you a new “Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony” (Form N-445) to tell you when your ceremony will be.
