  • Place of Residence Requirement

One of the requirements at the time of application for U.S. citizenship is:

*Have lived within the state, or USCIS district with jurisdiction over the applicant’s place of residence, for at least 3 months prior to the date of filing the application.

After graduating college, I moved in to live with my parents for about six months, then studied abroad in China for approximately one year. Assuming that my continuous residency holds, have I satisfied the * requirement above? I ask this because I just got back from China only a few days ago--I'm wondering whether I have to wait another three months in order to send in the application.

Also, how can I prove that I've lived in my parents' home for at least three months?

What you need to do right away is to apply for issuing a Driver license or State Photoed ID from the office in charge for such cards in the district/city where you intend to live. Remember that in the interview they will ask you to present either the driving license or the ID card. Either is a prove that you spent 3 months or so there. This means you need to wait 3 months immediately before you file your n-400. In other words if you did your study in the US then such requirement would not be a mandatory one as you may do your study in the same district/state or away (allowable for students only). Good Luck.
