  • loss of certificate of Naturalization

    so here is my story,
I have obtained my citizenship two years ago, and have obtained my passport and passport card on october 2011. However, after all the documentations have been sent, only the passport and passport card arrived at the mail. but the certificate was not returned and my copy was lost do to home burglary. I have called the immigration services, and they told me everything have been sent and there is a possibility that the document was lost. the immigration officer said, I can file for a replacement. my question, is why do I have to pay the fees for something that is not my mistake? and two, is the certificate important even if I have the passport? and three, can a passport substitute the certificate as a proof for citizenship?

    thank you in advance

"why do I have to pay the fees for something that is not my mistake?"
And what would be the alternative ? For the USPS to pay for it? Sure - if you can prove they lost it. Otherwise, it's up to you. Suck it up.

    Yes/Yes.

But you already lost your naturalization certificate. While your passport is indeed proof of US citizenship - if you lose the passport, then you have no way to prove your citizenship.

    So - get a replacement.

I have never stated anything about the alternative. The system should take responsibility for their mistake. they should have tracking numbers for something that is important. two, even if they lost it, they should at least have the courtesy to apologize and admit their mistake. either way, I am already sucking it up hahahha.

P.S. just because you are a senior member, it does not give you the right to speak with such hostility and impoliteness. I have asked a question discreetly and politely, and yet I receive a response filled with possible hostility. let me guess your answer to my reply, SUCK IT UP.

for the second question, thank you for a helpful answer. I appreciate it.

        Hi Sarkamato
First sorry to hear about your Nat Cert, however I believe that if you applied via mail and thru Passport Agency then it's normal to receive your passport and then after a week or sometimes more than that, then you should receive another mail with your Nat Cert.

I also recall reading such a message in an official site but I don't remember where exactly, anyway the only thing is to wait for a couple of days and if nothing arrives by mail then you got no other options but just go ahead and apply for a replacement.

Wish you good luck and hope you get something in the mail soon.

        Regards

Loss of Naturalization Certificate in Transit

In the case of the loss in transit of the Naturalization , the best course is to get an authentication of document (Naturalization certificate) by applying to
            "U.S. Department of State
            Authentications Office
            518 23rd Street NW.
            SA-1
            Washington, DC 20520".
It may cost you $8.00 as fees for that.
            2. Yes, the second is important and is required when you apply for "Renunciation" of your earlier nationality, if it is required by your country of origin.
            3. Passport will only serve to prove that you are a U.S citizen and does not mention from whence. Only the Naturalization certificate proves that you became U.S. citizen from that particular date.
