J2 entry to the US while J1 is abroad

My spouse (J2) and I (J1) are traveling to our home country to renew our visa stamps. Does anyone know if the J2 holder can enter the US (with a new visa stamp but this is not the first time entering under J2 status) while the J1 is still abroad? On this site it says that with the exception of the initial entry to the US, the J2 can travel freely in and out. Is this also the case when renewing the visa and while the J1 is not in the US?
