J2 Work-permit EAD extension

Hi.

I've been working for the last two years under a J2 and work permit that expires next June 8th. In April I started the process of renewing my work permit and today I've got an update on the USCIS web page that says "your card is being processed". I was wondering the following questions regarding the case, hope someone can clarify those:

Do I need to receive the new EAD card to start working again?
Can I go back to work as soon as I see "case approved" in the USCIS website?

your employer won't let you as that is not enough to meet the I-9 requirements
