Home residency if I do not complete the fellowship

Hello everyone,

I am in the US on a J1 exchange visa. I am subjected to 212(e) which is the home residency requirement. I want to know if I leave the fellowship in the middle or lets say 2 months before, would 212(e) be affected in any way? Do I still have to stay in my home country for 2 years before I get any employment visa?

Most concrete way is to ask for an advisory opinion (https://travel.state.gov/content/tra...-opinions.html) to confirm you are subject to the requirement. Various sources online suggest the annotation on the J1 visa is not always accurate.

But let's say you already know... I don't think 212(e) is dependent on how long you participate. It's more based on use of government funding among other things.
