Hello everyone, i am currently in the US for a visiting period under the J1 visa. Since with some friends we are planning a road trip and we want to rent a car, we were wondering if this is possible (we all have a J1 visa). Information on Internet seems pretty confusing and i don't understand if we can just rent the car with our italian driving licenses or we need some additional documents. Thank you very much!

Yes, you can rent a car in the US with your Italian driving license, provided that you are at least 21 years old and have a valid passport. You may also be asked to provide an international driving permit (IDP), which can be obtained from your local automobile association.
The specific requirements for renting a car in the US may vary by state and by rental car company. However, most companies will accept an Italian driving license as long as it is valid and is accompanied by a passport. You may also be asked to provide a credit card with a valid billing address in the US.
Here are some tips for renting a car in the US with an Italian driving license:- Check with the rental car company in advance to confirm their requirements.
- Bring your Italian driving license, passport, and IDP (if you have one) to the rental car counter.
- Be prepared to provide a credit card with a valid billing address in the US.
- Ask about any additional fees or restrictions that may apply.
With some advance planning, you should be able to rent a car in the US with your Italian driving license and enjoy your road trip.

it's important to check with the specific car rental company you plan to use, as requirements may vary. Some car rental companies may have additional policies or documentation requirements for international visitors. They may ask for an international driving permit (IDP) in addition to your Italian license. An IDP is a translation of your license into multiple languages and is recognized in many countries, including the United States.
To ensure a smooth rental process, I recommend contacting the car rental company directly and asking about their specific requirements for international renters with a J1 visa. They can provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information on the necessary documents.
Additionally, make sure to review any insurance options offered by the rental company and understand the rules of the road in the U.S., as they may differ from those in Italy. Have a safe and enjoyable road trip!

I’m from Italy, and I was in the US recently on a tourist visa. I rented a car without any issues using my Italian driving license. In my case, the rental company accepted it without needing an International Driving Permit (IDP), but I’d still recommend checking with the company you plan to rent from, just to be sure.
I was in Miami, and rented the car from here: https://realcar.miami/fleet/suv. I rented a Porsche Macan for $149 a day. The process was super smooth—they delivered the car to me, and it was new and spotless. My friends and I had a great time driving out of town, and everything worked out perfectly. If you’re planning a road trip, it’s worth looking into a service like that.Last edited by glideglo; 10-15-2024, 05:28 AM.
