Converting from Visitor to J2 in USA

Hi,

I am in USA on visitor visa and my spouse will have J1 visa.
Can I convert from visitor to J2 while I am in USA?
If so how long does it take?

It is normally difficult to change status from Visitor to anything. But technically it can be done. Search for form I-539 and instructions.
If J1 visa was obtained after to entered the US, you can state this in your cover letter that you did not have any idea that your spouse will be using J1 Visa. You can make this application after your spouse enters the US and before your own I-94 expires.
