Hi people,
My Boyfriend/Partner of 8 years has an academic scholar J-1, and I'm in the States on a B-2 currently. We're both foreigners, and were recognised de facto at home and in Canada. He's been here about a year and we are not married. If we were to marry say ... next week, therefore obviously after his J-1 has been issued, am I able to apply thereafter for the J-2? Assuming the host institution will sponsor, of course.
Just to be clear, I realise I can't easily change from B-2 to J-2 while in the USA; but does marriage after J-1 issuance enable/qualify me for the J-2 application?
I also realise I'll have to get the visa issued in our home country, but can/should the marriage occur in the USA, or would that also have to occur in our home country?
Thanks for your collective wisdom.
