There is no one-size-fits-all time frame. It varies from country to country. The US embassy in your country will send you a packet of forms and instructions after they receive your case file from the National Visa Center (NVC).

    The standard required documents are:

    1. I-134 Affidavit of Support (to be completed by your fiance and notarized)

    2. Supporting documents for the I-134 from your fiance, e.g. latest federal tax return, bank statement, letter of employment, pay stubs, etc.

    3. Certified past marriage AND divorce certificates (if any) for you. Bring copies and originals. They will keep the copies if they so choose.

    4. Proof of ongoing relationship between you and your fiance, e.g. more photos, e-mails, letters, etc. If you live in a high-fraud country, collate as much evidence as possible. The embassy must not be left in any doubt of the legitimacy of your relationship.

    5. Updated letter of intent to marry from your fiance.

    6. Proof of engagement, e.g. pictures of your engagement ring(s), ring receipts, etc. If there is no ring, find other evidence, e.g. congratulatory notes from family members (yours and his).

    7. Certified copy of your birth certificate.

    8. Police certificate of non-criminal conduct. The embassy's instructions will explain how this is obtained in your country.

    9. Full medical exam and copy of vaccination record. Again, the embassy will instruct you on this accordingly. You can only go to embassy-appointed clinics because they have the required forms to complete and submit after your exam is complete.

There will be other forms that you MUST complete and return immediately when you receive the packet from the embassy. Read all instructions carefully and if anything is not clear, make sure you ask the embassy until you understand completely.

Again, remember that every country's American embassy has slightly different procedures and instructions. What happened in my case may not apply to yours, but the majority of the documents listed above are standard, especially the I-134. Have your fiance prepare this and the supporting documentation while you wait for your packet from the embassy.
