  • how long do you have to be married

I have married my wife who is a american citizen. I was just curious I know you have to be together 2 years to get a greencard but is this 2 years from when we got married or two years from when I was approved after the interview?
    Thanks

I think that you are asking about the 10-year "unconditional" Permanent Resident Card. After one's interview, if being processed in the U.S., you get a 2-year "Conditional" Green Card if your marriage is less than two years old. At one year and 9-months from issuance of the 2-year card, you can apply for the 10-year card, using the "Removal of Conditions" procedure (I-751).

I thought once you have been married 2 years you have the greencard for life.? Is it only for 10 years? So like I said if you have to be married for two years does the two years start when I get my temporary greencard after the interview or the day we got married?

The two-year Green Card duration begins when the two-year Green Card is issued.

If you have been married for more than two years when you apply for Adjustment of Status, (or arrive in the U.S. as an immigrant), you will get a 10-year Green Card.

"Green Cards for life" have not been issued for about 20 years or more.
