Help with Spanish naming customs

Hello everyone I am glad I found this website. I am beginning to build a case for an 1-601a waiver and would like help clarifying filling out the applications. My wife entered without inspection years ago. We married last year in NY and decided to change her name to my last name(First name, middle name, last name). However on her passport it still uses naming customs in Honduras(First, Middle, Father's name de My last name). When we went to change the name on her passport to her new surname they would only do it the way they do it in Honduras. (First, Middle, Fathers name de My last name). We also used put the name the way it is on her passport on our taxes. Should I use the name the way it is on her passport or the way it is on our marriage certificate and are there any areas where the difference between the two can lead to a conflict? Thank you

This naming confusion occurs regularly with women from Latin American countries, and with men as well.

It seems that the rules (naming conventions) even vary between Latin American countries, often depending on family tradition or even social class.

Usually, you are bound by the particular country rules with following that country's convention for names on passports after marriage. An alternative is to just keep the passport name the way it is, but have all other paperwork a U.S. convention. This a quite common practice with many women from outside the U.S., and is okay so long as copies of marriage and other enabling documents are carried when reentering the U.S. with a Green Card in one name and a passport in another name.
