Marry in India on a K1?

My fiance' and I would like to have a wedding in India that all our family could attend and then come to the US and become legally married. My fiance' has a K1 visa. Would it be illegal for us to marry in India prior to coming to the US?

I assume you are US citizen.

If you get married to your fiance outside US, he is no longer fiance, but spouse. And would have to go through either K3 visa or immigrant visa process.
