Hello all,
I just got engaged to my American fiancé whom I met while in college in the states. I live in Switzerland.
She will now apply for my K1 visa. I read that this process takes up to 90 days. Is this correct?
Once I have my interview with the embassy and all that stuff and finally receive my K1 visa I can travel to the states and get married correct? To speed things up we decided to first just get married in court and then have a celebratory wedding later. What documents do I need to bring to the courthouse?
My MAIN question is:
Once we get married, can I start working right away? I know I have to process the I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization) form. Does this mean once we get married I am legally allowed to stay in the US starting the next day. I've read that it takes up to 8 months to get a work authorization. Is this true? Furthermore, under the K1 visa, am I legally allowed to work in the US as well?
