  • Canadian marrying a US Citizen

    Hi Guys,

    I needed some advice/opinion regarding marriage to a US citizen and moving to USA.

    I am a Canadian national who recently got engaged to a US Citizen. (although, i am currently residing in Malaysia for my Masters).
    My fiance and i plan to get married in Pakistan, which is where we are originally from. Following this, I would want to move to the States with him. I needed help as to how to go about this.

    I do realize I have a few options;

    1. Applying for a K-1 Fiance Visa, getting married in the States and then changing my status to a permanent resident - i'm not keen on exercising this option because the non-us spouse is not allowed to leave the country (USA) till the processing is complete. Because i have family abroad i would like to have room to travel. But feel free to correct me. Another reason I'm not too keen about this option is because we would like to have the official wedding ceremony in Pakistan.

    2. Getting married abroad and then applying for an immigrant visa to be able to join my new husband in USA. I am extremely unclear about this option and how it works. From what I've gathered, this waiting period could take up to 1.5 years or even more. Does this mean I won't be able to live with my husband all this while?

    Does this also mean that I can no longer enter USA on my tourist visa? At all?

    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you so much!
