  • Getting Married in India

    Hello,

Thank you for setting up this site, very helpful. However, each person has some different story. I am reaching out to this site for some help and point me in the right direction. I am what you call a coconut . I was born in India however; I have been in the US since I was 6 years old. I am a US Citizen and have been for a long time. I am guajarati.

I am recently divorced with divorce decree in hand. I have been to India several times and have found a "wife to be" in Gujarat. I have been thru many threads and various website and cannot seem to get a straight answers.

I am trying to convince my WTB "wife to be" family for her to come here on a Fiancé Visa (K1). However, they are traditional family and until marriage, they feel uncomfortable. That being said, I am working on that issue. In mean time, I am planning a return trip to India in November to get married.

Here are my questions assuming I have to get married in India.
    1) Getting a married in Gujarat; I heard that I have to get a “no objection letter”. I live near San Francisco so I can go to the embassy? I have read mixed reviews about this letter and who will issue it.
    2) I am also confused on which type of marriage “Hindu Marriage Act” or “Special Marriage Act”. The Special marriage act, has a lot of caveats. Such as 30 days newspaper ad, religious background (we are both of Gujarati background).
    3) Where in Gujarat (Ahmedabad or Surat) can I get a marriage certificate? Are there any special requirements? Is there a website where I can start an online process?
    4) Has anyone been thru this kind of scenario, whom can help with the right path? I have a limited time in India and want to get everything organized prior to my departure.

Thanks in advance for the help.

BTW I will open another thread on the K3 & K4 questions, I have started to fill out the I-130, I-130A and I-864. However, I need to get married first and that is a process in itself.

(Apoligizes if this is in the wrong thread, mod's please feel free to move it to the apporiate thread.)

    K-3 & K-4 are no longer issued

Your spouse-to-be will remain abroad for as long as it takes for her immigrant visa to be issued. Ballpark 1 year

Thank you for the feedback, however according to the guide on this website it says K1&K2(Childern) for Fiance and K3&K4 (chidren). I am more confused now.

Cruel, isn't it? USCIS will keep the K-3 K-4 info on their website until Congress repeals the authorization to grant those visas, but in reality USCIS will not grant them
