  • post-wedding AOS & name issues

I have some bureaucratic questions and I'd really appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this confusing situation.

My story thus far: I successfully acquired a K-1 visa for my beloved Ethiopian fiance. He arrived in October and we had our wedding a month later. We are now happily married. So far so good, right? The problem is that in Ethiopia the people use their father's name as their last name, but when getting official docs (such as a passport) the grandfather's name gets used as the surname. To make a long story short(er), we filled out the original I-129 papers using his grandfather's name but now he wants to use his father's name. So we wrote that down on the marriage license and on the I-485 papers... Seems like a simple change that's easily documented through the marriage certificate but I'm not sure the USCIS will see it that way. We also tried to get an ID card for him from the DMV but they said we'd have to get his name changed on his passport through Homeland Security. Sooo a simple thing seems to have become a major hassle.

Can anyone tell me what would be the best line of action for me to take at this point? Should I contact USCIS to explain the name change? How will this affect our chances of approval and the processing time? Does anyone know how I can officially get his name changed?

    Thanks so much!
