  • happen to anyone else?

Ok, my husband is Canadian, but attend University in USA for 4 1/2 years. I just found out he was given a SSN by INS, but the card states "valid for work only with INS authorization." Which I was told was so he could work on campus. When it asks for SSN on forms, should I use this number or leave it blank?

Yes, use that SSN. It's for his for life.

Even if he hasnt attended, lived or worked in US for 2 years? He was under the impression it was just temporary, but it is not?

        Nope, SSN is forever

The SSN lives with the person to who it's allocated - FOREVER.

        Take care.

          Thank you so much,
one more question, will it affect my I-130 application if I left SNN blank for spouse?

If you are concerned about "valid for work only with INS authorization" on the SSN card, you need not, because that will change once he immigrates to the US.

SSN stays the same even if you legally change your name. The only time a SSN changes is under the DOJ's witness protection program.
