Canadian Police Certificates

Help! My husband lived in Canada for about a year before we were married and has since then moved back to the UK while we wait for his US Visa to go through. We are currently in the process of collecting all of the documents and they need police certifications from all the places he's lived. Does anyone know if he needs to get fingerprinted for a Canadian police certification or can he just request a name based check?
