  • Marriage license for fian'ce question

what type of license is acceptable to immigrations ? We were planning to marry at our religious organization and they would officially stamp it and then we were going to notarize it. Is this suffice or must we go to city hall/justice of peace ?

Marriage in the United States falls under the State government of where you marry. So there are 50 different sets of rules depending on where you live, but you will need an official license, not just a religious document. In many cases, you get a license at the county courthouse. Then your religious minister who is allow to perform weddings in the state signs it after he has perfomed the wedding. Then it is filed in the official records of the county or state. You should google "marriage license California" for example to find the rules for your state. Try to find a website that is a state government website, not somebody selling wedding supplies or advertising something. A marriage performed anywhere in the US is accepted in any state and by immigration. For example if you live in Oklahoma, but marry in Las Vegas Nevada, it's still legal. But in that case, you would have to follow Nevada rules if the ceremony takes place there.
