  • London Embassy question

I am SO confused! On October 24, 2009, I received the letter from the National Visa Center confirming our K-1 Visa was approved and our case was being submitted to the London Embassy. My fiance received his letter from the London embassy that only states for him to look at this link to prepare documentation:

My question is: does my fiance submit all this documentation to the London Embassy now or do we wait until he gets his interview date?? We are so confused and obviously do not want to sit and wait around if WE are supposed to be doing something??!

You gather every document on the IV-15 checklist...birth certificate, affidavit of support, police report, etc. Be sure and read every link on that webpage. It discusses what you need. So many people show up with the wrong kind of birth certificate because they didn't read the details that it's the "long form" version and must have the parent's names on it. Many Brits have a "short form" birth certificate they used for school and such.

If you are confused by that webpage, then you probably haven't read everything there is to read. There's a right column that says "more information" I believe. There's links to FAQs. Study it well.

So you mail in to London these forms so they can start setting up your file:
    DS-230 Part 1 (that's page 1 & 2 of a four page document)
    DS-156
    DS-156K
    DS-157

Some are signed, some are not. It tells you on the embassy webpage or one of the links. One has a place to "swear" before the embassy officer that you are telling the truth in his presence. That's the one you don't sign, because he has to witness you signing.

You can mail in the IV-15 checklist with those four documents if you already have each of the things that applies in your possession. If not, then you mail in the DS forms ASAP and start gathering the checklist items. Once you have the checklist items in hand, you mail it back as a way of saying "I've got everything now and I'm ready to come to an interview." You take the checklist items to the interview. All you mail in is the I-15 checklist paper.

While you are waiting on your documents, make an appointment for the medical exam. Then visit your GP and get a good record of all jabs you have had in your life. Try to get them to give you any shots you are lacking. Most NHS will do them free for you, but they don't have to since it's for immigration. Most likely all he needs is MMR and Tdap (or Td) and proof of having chickenpox and he'll be set for Adjustment of Status once in the US. He will take that record of shots from his NHS doctor to the visa medical exam and they will record them in his records.

Note: nobody has to get all the shots in order to get a visa. But if you will take care of it now, it will save you time and money when it's time to apply for AOS. You (he) won't have to pay a Civil Surgeon in the US to record more shots on an I-693 medical form. He can use the form they will give him in London, if he's met all the immunization requirements.

Be sure and read the list of things to bring to the interview...the checklist items. There are things that may apply to him or may not.
    Military record?

Has he ever been married? Then his original marriage certificate.

Ever been arrested for any reason, even as a 16 year old foir mischief? Must get papers from the court showing how it was handled.

Does he have any ongoing or previous medical problems...high blood pressure, diabetes, depression? He must have a written statement from the GP who care for him during those illnesses to turn in at the visa medical exam. Find the information on what to include on that webpage.
